{"id":1263,"date":"2016-08-17T02:48:54","date_gmt":"2016-08-17T02:48:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wireless-telemetry.com\/blog\/?p=1263"},"modified":"2016-08-17T02:48:54","modified_gmt":"2016-08-17T02:48:54","slug":"inhibiting-free-flow-at-an-inline-booster-pump-station-with-an-automated-gate-valve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wireless-telemetry.com\/blog\/?p=1263","title":{"rendered":"Inhibiting Free Flow at an Inline Booster Pump Station with an Automated Gate Valve"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Valve Automation at Potable Water Districts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Valve Automation serves a vital role\u00a0in\u00a0Potable Water Telemetry Control System Integration. \u00a0Valves are used in a variety of applications, which broadly include OPEN\/CLOSE applications for ON\/OFF flow control, as well as MODULATING applications for variable pressure and flow control.<div id=\"attachment_1843\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1843\" src=\"https:\/\/wireless-telemetry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Jim_Mimlitz_Newsletter-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/wireless-telemetry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Jim_Mimlitz_Newsletter.jpg 2x\" alt=\"admin\" class=\"avatar avatar-150 wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-150 photo\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1843\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jim Mimlitz, NRI<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>This article will address an interesting problem that we recently solved through Valve Automation. \u00a0One of our newest clients has a distribution infrastructure that consists of an Elevated Tank in the middle of the town; and the overall distribution system is fed by a Booster Pump Station approximately 3 miles outside of town. \u00a0The Booster Pump Station is the custody transfer point where bulk water is purchased from a larger nearby city.<\/p>\n<p>The pump station is outfitted with two 15 HP booster pumps, two VFDs, and a wireless telemetry system that controls the pumps based upon remote elevated tank level readings acquired via telemetry. \u00a0The bulk water supplier provides water pressure that is sufficient to gravity feed water through the station, as well\u00a0\u2014 typically at a flow rate of 40 GPM.<\/p>\n<p>The influent pressure was not so high that the elevated tank would overflow \u2014 However, during periods when the pumps were OFF, the relatively constant gravity free-flow prevented the level of water in the elevated tank from drawing low enough to turnover\/refresh the water in the tank.<\/p>\n<p>In order to allow the water level in the tank to draw down further, it was desirable to shut OFF the free-flow whenever the pumps were OFF. \u00a0This could be accomplished by retrofitting an existing isolation gate valve in the station with a telemetry-controlled, OPEN\/CLOSE electric actuator.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1283 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/wireless-telemetry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Gate_Valve_Automation_001.jpg\" alt=\"Gate_Valve_Automation_001\" width=\"963\" height=\"569\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1266\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1266\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1266\" src=\"https:\/\/wireless-telemetry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Valve_Before_01.jpg\" alt=\"On the Influent Side of the Station, There Existed a Manual Gate Valve Which Could Be Automated To Inhibit Free-Flow.\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1266\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>On the Influent Side of the Station, There Existed a Manual Gate Valve Which Could Be Automated To Inhibit Free-Flow.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The existing 4 inch AWWA-type gate valve on the influent pipe was an excellent candidate for retrofit controls to inhibit free-flow. \u00a0The original valve had a handwheel actuator, which would need to be removed and replaced with a mounting plate for an electric actuator. \u00a0However, based on analysis of all factors, the approach with the lowest cost, risk, and down-town consisted of acquiring a replacement AWWA-style gate valve (identical lay-length) with the proper mounting hardware\u00a0\u2014 rather than attempt to remove and retrofit the existing valve.<\/p>\n<p>Extensive research led us to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanavk.com\/\">American AVK<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(Minden, NV), a US-based manufacturer who produces\u00a0a full line of AWWA-type gate valves. \u00a0American AVK especially stood out due to their flexibility and their ability to quickly and economically provide a valve with an industry-standard FA-10 mounting plate\/actuator interface via their local distributor, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hdswaterworks.com\">HD Supply Waterworks<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1265\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1265\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1265\" src=\"https:\/\/wireless-telemetry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/American_AVK_Gate_Valve_FA10_Actuator_Mount-933x1024.jpg\" alt=\"American AVK Gate Valve. 4 Inch Size. Note the Absence of Free-Flow When Pump is OFF.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The project was a total success. \u00a0Free-flow was inhibited during pump OFF cycles, allowing the water level in the elevated tank to draw down lower and refresh, which assists the Water District in maintaining target chlorine residuals.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that projects such as this could also be accomplished with a butterfly valve and a quarter-turn electric actuator.
