Jim Mimlitz, NRI<\/p><\/div>I am very\u00a0appreciative\u00a0of\u00a0all the positive feedback that I’ve received over the past few\u00a0days as a result of this 3-part series of articles: Part 1<\/a>, Part 2<\/a>, Part 3<\/a>.\u00a0 I am glad that I was able to convey how the latest VFD technology\u00a0\u2014 when leveraged to\u00a0its full\u00a0capability and\u00a0coupled tightly with\u00a0our new VFD & Energy Analytics\u00a0Telemetry Software\u00a0\u2014\u00a0is capable of providing so much more value than ever before realized. Many points were covered, and hopefully\u00a0there was something of interest for everyone.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0main inquiry that I’ve received is with regard to the Make\/Model of VFD’s that are compatible with the new Telemetry Analytics Software Package. As mentioned in Part 2, the new Analytics Software was\u00a0designed to leverage the rich capability\u00a0incorporated in\u00a0the Allen Bradley PowerFlex Drive Family<\/strong>.\u00a0 However, many clients already have\u00a0VFD’s of various makes and models installed, including those manufactured by ABB, Eaton, GE\/Fuji, and Toshiba.\u00a0 The question is, “Will my existing VFD’s need to be replaced in order to benefit from this new\u00a0technology?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The short answer is \u2014 probably not \u2014\u00a0VFD replacement will not\u00a0necessarily\u00a0be required<\/strong> \u2014 but\u00a0there are\u00a0a few caveats.\u00a0 The implementation of VFD & Energy Analytics requires two-way communications with the VFD through a network port, and each manufacturer handles this differently.\u00a0Also, some drives provide only a subset of the data that is available from the PowerFlex model.<\/p>\n

We have developed a plan, which outlines full\u00a0support for\u00a0legacy VFD equipment and targeted support for future VFD equipment.<\/p>\n

Based on an assessment of installation history, and\u00a0as illustrated in the chart below, there are\u00a0five VFD makes that are installed across our client base.\u00a0 Of those five, we have completed VFD & Energy Analytics software\u00a0development for three (Allen Bradley, Eaton, Toshiba); and we are already contracted by clients to complete the remaining two (ABB, GE\/Fuji):<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

If you are an existing NRI client and already have drives that were installed prior to 01 Jan 2015,\u00a0we are extending\u00a0the offer to connect them\u00a0to our VFD & Energy Analytics Telemetry Software,\u00a0to the\u00a0extent supported by the particular drives’ built-in networking capability.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As illustrated in the above table — for years 2015 and beyond — we plan to\u00a0focus our VFD & Energy Analytics Software development and integration\u00a0upon\u00a0PowerFlex drives and\u00a0those from other manufacturers that were installed only before 01 Jan 2015.\u00a0 We strive to be flexible, so there may be exceptions, but these are the general principles that we will be following in order to avoid a never-ending Research & Development effort.<\/p>\n
